If you have gum disease, deep cleaning, which is also called scaling and root planing, may be recommended. This procedure helps treat gum disease, which is also known as periodontal disease. Healthy gums fit snugly around the teeth, but those with periodontal disease have gums that are separating from the teeth. This causes periodontal pockets to form. When you come in for your routine dental appointment, Dr. Seth Rush will measure from the top of the gumline to where the gums attach to the teeth. What Is Scaling?
Scaling is like a routine dental cleaning. We can remove the plaque and tartar from the surfaces of all of your teeth both above and below the gumline.
What Is Root Planing?
Root planing is a process in which the plaque and tartar is removed from the roots of the teeth. In addition, the rough spots on the tooth roots are smoothed out. This makes it more difficult for bacteria to attach to the roots and gives the gums a clean, smooth surface to reattach to. This process usually takes one to two hours and can be scheduled for one or two appointments.
What Should I Expect After a Deep Cleaning?
After scaling and root planing, you may experience tooth sensitivity, soreness, or bleeding. This should only last for a few days. We may recommend that you schedule a follow-up appointment. Together, scaling and root planing can restore the health of your smile!
