If you want to keep your gums from bleeding when you brush and floss your teeth and even when you eat, then our periodontist, Dr. Seth Rush, has the tips you need. Fortunately, there are things you can do to keep your gums in tip-top shape and keep them from bleeding. Our periodontist is happy to tell you all about them.
First, brush your teeth every morning and night for two minutes each time. Your gums typically bleed because of the bacteria and infection in the area (which is often caused by the first stage of gum disease). If the area is cleaned often, the gums won’t need to send blood to the area to fight the bacteria and infection.
Second, floss once a day. You can floss with whichever product you would like. As you floss, be gentle along the gumline. Flossing can help clean the area and eliminate the harmful substances that irritate and harm the gums, just like brushing can.
Third, visit your dentist for your routine dental cleaning and checkup appointments. This is important because the cleaning treatment provided will remove the harmful substances better than your toothbrush and floss can. In fact, it’s one of the only ways to completely remove the harmful bacteria from your mouth. So, make sure to visit your dentist twice a year (every six months).
