Fighting Gum Disease

Posted .

Gum disease can have many causes, but the primary factor in gum disease is a buildup of plaque and tartar on your teeth. In reaction to the presence of plaque, your gums begin to swell, allowing more plaque to accumulate below the gumline, and raising the risk of infection.

Brushing and flossing, along with regular visits to your dentist for cleanings and exams can prevent the buildup of plaque, but if gum disease has become a problem for you, our periodontist, Dr. Seth Rush can help. You may need to make some changes to your lifestyle and your oral hygiene regimen, or your periodontist can prescribe a medication or suggest other treatments. If your gum disease in the early stages, known as gingivitis, your periodontist may treat you through the processes of scaling and root planing

Scaling involves the doctor using a special instrument to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, both above and below the gumline. Afterward, usually in a subsequent appointment, the he will perform a root-planing. In root planing, the doctor will smooth out the roots of the tooth so that the the roots can re-attach themselves to your jaw. You will need to come back and see the doctor so that he can check your progress and to see if another procedure may be needed.
