Are you scared to floss because your gums will bleed? Do they swell up or do they cause persistent pain? If so, you may have periodontal disease. If you think you have periodontal disease (also called gum disease), call Dr. Seth Rush at 816-444-8822 for a dental checkup. Meanwhile, we will provide you with some helpful tips for home diagnosis and treatment.

Let’s look into the specifics of periodontal symptoms. Some include:

  • Gums that easily bleed
  • Swollen, tender, or red gums
  • Gums that recede from the tooth
  • Tooth positions change
  • Pain when chewing
  • Teeth that are unusually sensitive to hot and cold
  • Loss of teeth
  • Pus coating the teeth and gums

If you manifest one or more of these symptoms, have no fear; gum disease can be stopped! First, remember that having some of these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean that you have the illness, but it does mean that you either have it or are probably going to have it.

So how do you treat gum disease? It is caused by the bacteria that inhabit plaque, so the key to fighting it is rather obvious: clean the plaque off of your teeth. You know the drill. Brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes, floss daily, and limit sugary and starchy foods. It’s that simple.

All you need to do is make a commitment to follow those three guidelines then come into Dr. Seth Rush and together we can fight gum disease.
